Mike Mordeci

Bio

Mike Mordecai, #UBO and Athletic Director at Northside Methodist Academy, was a multisport athlete at Hewitt-Trussville High School but excelled in baseball. As a standout baseball player, he gained the attention of several collegiate programs. Ultimately, he went on to play at the University of South Alabama, where he is listed in the Hall of Fame, he holds 4 school records for 235 runs scored and 277 hits, a single season record of at-bats of 262 and 94 RBIs with additional accolades such as first Jaguar to be named to the first-team preseason All-American.

During his professional career, Mordecai showed that diversity was important. He was drafted by the Braves in ‘89 and made his MLB debut with them in 1994, where his first hit in the MLB was a three-run homerun in the 9th inning against the Phillies and made his first of two World Series appearances! Mordecai would go on to play for the Expos, where he again came in clutch, showing diversity as an athlete and assuming the position of catcher in the 10th inning of a game. In 2002, he was traded to the Marlins, and in 2003, his three-run double during the World Series would begin the demise of the Cubs during “The Inning” as it is now known. Ultimately, the Marlins would win the 2003 World Series, marking Mordecai’s second career. Again, he would fill in as catcher the following season in a pinch and would also be remembered for catching the last out of the Expos’ final home game.

Mordecai retired from playing in 2005 before becoming a manager in the Marlins organization. In 2010, he was hired by the Blue Jays as an Infield Coordinator and was promoted to Coordinator of Instruction in 2015. In 2018, he was promoted again to the Blue Jays’ Quality Control Coach before becoming the manager of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Currently, he is the Athletic Director at Northside Methodist Academy, where he remains active in the sport he played so very well. Mordecai’s roles as both a player, in almost every defensive position, as well as, his experiences as a coach have given him a wealth of knowledge that he readily shares with athletes of all abilities. An invaluable asset to our family, his insight and leadership are paramount. Mike, we are proud of U!
